3G Development in China September 21-27

- Chinese telecom operator China Unicom recently announced that it will officially launch its WCDMA (Wideband Code Division Multiple Access) service on October 1, 2009, and is set to begin selling iPhones on October 15, the China Tech News reported on September 21. Two iPhone models, available in 8GB and 16GB sizes, will be launched, of which 8GB iPhone will price at 1,999 RMB (US$294.0; US$1 = 6.8 RMB) and 16GB model at 2,999 RMB (US$441.0) if users subscriber to a two-year plan paying 186 RMB (US$27.4) per month. Meanwhile, China Unicom is set to distribute iPhones through three channels, including electronic chains, distribution channels and Internet sales, according to the same source.

- China Mobile and Nokia Siemens recently announced that they have conducted a TD-LTE (Time Division-Long Term Evolution) femtocell demonstration, according to a press release by Nokia Siemens Network on September 21. Being the first of its kind in the industry, the demo, led by Nokia Siemens Network's Beijing research team and conducted in China Mobile's Research Institute laboratory, aimed to demonstrate how femtocells can help to deliver better service quality by improving indoor coverage for users subscribing to the TD-LTE broadband services. In the demo, the research team unveiled a live streming video downlink application leveraging a compact experimental femtocell prototype, which allows TD-LTE to have greater throughputs than the xDSL (Digital Subscriber Line) via residential broadband connections.
